高壓往復泵的工作壓力一般應在10MPa到100MPa之間。屬于容積泵，通過工作腔內(nèi)容積的周期性變化來輸送液體，原動機的機械能直接轉化為泵輸送液體的壓力能；泵的容量僅取決于工作腔容積的變化值及其單元時間內(nèi)的變化次數(shù)，理論上與排出壓力無關。高壓往復泵通度日塞在液壓缸工作腔中的往復運動（或隔膜、波紋管等彈性元件的周期性彈性變形），使工作腔的容積周期性地變化。在布局上，往復泵的工作腔通過密封裝置與外界分別，通過泵閥（吸入閥和排出閥）與管道連通或封閉。因為在高壓往復泵中，液體介質的吸入和排出過程是交替的，而活塞在排量過程中，其轉速是不絕變化的。因此，在只有一個工作腔的泵中，泵的瞬時流量不光隨時間變化，而且是不繼續(xù)的。隨著工作腔的增大，瞬時流量的顛簸幅度越來越小，在實際中可視為穩(wěn)定流量。

理論上，高壓往復泵的流量只取決于泵的重要布局參數(shù)，與排出壓力無關，與輸送介質的溫度、粘度等理化性質無關。所以泵的流量是恒定的。其排出壓力不能受泵自己的限制，而取決于泵裝置的管路特性，與流量無關。

如果認為輸送液體是弗成緊縮的，理論上往復泵的排出壓力將不受限制，按照泵裝置的管路特性，可以確定泵所需的任何排出壓力。固然，所有往復式泵都有泵的排出壓力調(diào)節(jié)，這并不意味著泵的排出壓力不會再升高，而只是由于原動機額定功率和泵自己的布局強度的限制，不允許使用超過此排出壓力的泵。

原則上，高壓往復泵可以輸送任何介質，幾乎不受介質物理化學性質的限制。固然，由于液壓真?zhèn)€質料和制造工藝以及密封技術的限制，有時會遇到不適應的環(huán)境。
