根據(jù)工藝要求提前給閥門設定壓力（就是擰螺絲調(diào)閥內(nèi)部彈簧壓縮程度），閥內(nèi)部彈簧和閥出口測壓管線通過力學平衡元件（氣缸內(nèi)有像活塞的可移動膜片）連接。流體壓力大時，閥出口測的壓力大于設定壓力，壓差推動膜片，帶動彈簧被壓縮，彈簧帶動閥芯關(guān)小，出口壓力就變小，直到出口壓力等于設定壓力；壓力小時，閥就開大些；閥門開關(guān)和調(diào)節(jié)閥相似，只是自力式閥的開閥動力源于流體自身的能量通過轉(zhuǎn)化變成動力。
自力式調(diào)節(jié)閥都利用閥輸出端的反饋信號（壓力、壓差、溫度）通過信號管傳遞到執(zhí)行機構(gòu)驅(qū)動閥瓣改變閥 門的開度，達到調(diào)節(jié)壓力、流量、溫度的目的。
直接作用 直接作用式調(diào)節(jié)閥又稱為彈簧負載式調(diào)節(jié)閥，其結(jié)構(gòu)內(nèi)有彈性元件：如彈簧、波紋管、波紋管式的溫包等，利用彈性力與反饋信號平衡的原理。

如果是壓力調(diào)節(jié)閥，反饋信號就是閥的出口壓力，通過信號管引入執(zhí)行機構(gòu)。
如果是流量調(diào)節(jié)閥，閥的出口處就有一個孔板（或者是其他阻力裝置）由孔板兩端取出壓差信號引入執(zhí)行機構(gòu)。
如果是溫度調(diào)節(jié)閥，閥的出口就有溫度傳感器（或者溫包）通過溫度傳感器內(nèi)介質(zhì)的熱脹冷縮驅(qū)動執(zhí)行機構(gòu)。
